Keep Your Distance from Calories

I heard a fascinating piece on NPR the other day. It had to do with the marketing of soda and other drinks in schools. Apparently, soft drink companies are now self-policing to provide low calorie alternatives to the sugar-laden sodas that are a leading cause of insulin resistance and pre-diabetes.

One high schooler who was interviewed said that she is now drinking a lot less soda, primarily because she doesn't have a class near the soda machine. Could eliminating a couple of hundred calories a day really be so easy?

It appears so. Try to think of all the times you've indulged in something just because it was close by. I bet it's a lot. (I know it was for me!)

We're creatures of habit, and we usually tread approximately the same paths each and every day. If you have a lot of calories in your path, you're almost certain to ingest a few of them.

Simply go over your normal day, try to figure out what lays in your path that you'd rather not gather, and either change your path or consciously bypass the easy calories. Remember, an extra 100 calories per day is equal to about 10 extra pounds per year.
